Research exploring how naturally occurring exercise data can help reveal patterns of teamwork will be presented at I/ITSEC 2026 in the paper “Detecting Teamwork Behaviors in Military Medical Exercise Transcripts Using a TeamSTEPPS-Based Lexicon.”

The study examines transcripts generated during military medical exercises and analyzes them for language associated with key teamwork behaviors, including communication, leadership, situation monitoring, and mutual support. Rather than relying only on additional surveys, ratings, or assessments, the approach looks at data that are already being produced as teams work through complex training scenarios.

This type of unobtrusive data collection offers an opportunity to better understand how teamwork develops and changes during an exercise without interrupting the training itself. By identifying patterns in how teams communicate and coordinate, the analysis can provide another source of evidence for recognizing strengths, identifying gaps, and informing future training design and evaluation.

The work reflects a broader effort to make better use of the rich data generated during military exercises and to turn everyday training interactions into meaningful insight for improving team performance and readiness.
